ROUND TABLE – HOW CAN WE PLAN FOR SUSTAINABLE CITIES BY IMPROVING URBAN AIR QUALITY IN AALBORG? LOCATION: MUSIKKHUS/AALBORG UNIVERSITY DATE: 4TH NOVEMBER TIME: 15:15 – 17:15 NORDICPATH – NORDIC PARTICIPATORY, HEALTHY, AND PEOPLE-CENTERED CITIES A two-hour roundtable for citizens, planners, politicians, experts, and everyone interested in SDG 11 – making sustainable cities and communities and interrelated issues as the SDG 3 - Good health and well-being, SDG 10 - Reduced inequalities, SDG 13- Climate action, SDG 7 - Affordable and clean energy, SDG 12- Responsible consumption and production, SDG 9 Industry, innovation, and infrastructure Air quality is vital for everyone but generally worst in cities. Citizens’ exposure to air pollutants derived e.g. from industry, transport, and energy production from woodburning to car use occurs in proximity or from regional or long-distance sources. Research usually focuses on identifying hotspots of high exposure and sources of exposure to air pollution with NO2 and PM2.5 to inform preventive actions. The aim of the roundtable is to ‘make sense together’ of measures and strategies that can potentially be implemented in planning for a healthier and sustainable Aalborg in the future. Top experts from Aarhus University, Copenhagen University, and Aalborg University engaged in research on urban quality together with a politician from Aalborg Municipality will discuss knowledge and measures for urban air quality in Denmark. Questions for the discussions are: • Why urban air quality is important in Denmark? • What is the status of knowledge on air quality in Danish cities? • What is the impact of diverse pollutants on the health of citizens? • Why is it extremely important to detect air quality problems to guide future strategies for healthier and more sustainable cities and communities? The roundtable focuses on sharing challenges and practical ways to know, tackle and work with urban air quality in Aalborg. Expert knowledge of air quality especially focuses on mapping exposure, and recent participatory approaches involving citizens-science aim to engage citizens in measurements to create awareness and identify unknown sources but also bring not-expert knowledge to have a voice in processes of knowledge production. After a short introduction, the roundtable will consist of three brief presentations followed by an open discussion that addresses the issue of air quality and urban planning in Aalborg • Making Sense Together.
