Abstract
How can democratic social movements use welfare institutions to transform structures of domination? Drawing on his book The Work of Politics: Making a Democratic Welfare State (Cambridge 2020), Steven Klein’s talk examines the democratic potentials of the welfare state. Drawing on the writings of Weber, Arendt, and Habermas, and historical episodes that range from the workers' movement in Bismarck's Germany to post-war Swedish feminism, The Work of Politics provides a bold rethinking of the history and future of the welfare state.

DEMOS (Democracy, Migration and Society) and CCWS (Centre for Comparative Welfare Studies) (AAU) are co-organizing the event.
