The Aalborg model of teaching in Architecture. - a talk about the Aalborg concept of teaching architectural design.

The building and construction industry is today facing great challenges due to the fact that energy consumption will have to be reduced to a considerable degree within the next few years in order to ensure that no further damage is done to the global environment. The industry is thus facing major changes in terms of public regulation and in the way building and construction is carried out in practice, whereby "bad habits" seen in relation to an energy optimisation of the building will have to give way to new and better methods.

It has been a natural challenge for a relatively new university like Aalborg University to develop teaching methods that are tailored to dealing with current societal/technological issues. In terms of both research and teaching, Aalborg University utilises an interdisciplinary approach to a considerable extent. Furthermore, the teaching side is characterised by working with practical problems, with a so-called problem-based learning approach, PBL, being used which is implemented in a project-organised learning environment. This approach means that knowledge can be acquired from the practical trade or profession in project work. Seen in relation to practice, the incorporation of academic knowledge means that innovative solutions in building and construction can be realised. This has been expressed by Børge Diderichsen, NOVO, as the following formula: Education + Enterprise = Innovation.

At Architecture & Design at Aalborg University, we have been working with sustainable environmental architecture. We use a model called the Integrated Design Process, or IDP, which is a hybrid method of designing integrated architecture in an interdisciplinary approach between architecture and engineering. The Integrated Design Process focuses on combining architecture, design, functional aspects, energy consumption, indoor environment, and construction in order to achieve a more holistic approach to sustainable environmental architecture. In my presentation I will provide an example of a student project in which this model is applied in practice.
