John Dirk Nieland, professor of medicine at Aalborg University, is working on designing a drug that can mimic a unique trate in shrews. The shrews can shrink their own cognitive tissue during winter and regrow it at spring. Mr. Nieland hopes that this could help humans with neurodegenerative diseases. He and his colleagues have received a grant from the French nonprofit Human Frontier Science Program to fund the research, and he expects to be ready to perform clinical trials next year.
