Beskrivelse

Porcupine populations in Europe have declined by over 30% in the last decade, leading to their classification as a threatened species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Sophie Lund Rasmussen, a porcupine researcher at Aalborg University and Oxford University, attributes this decline to habitat loss due to agriculture, residential development, and road construction. "The porcupines are full of pesticides from the gardens. We are talking about both mouse and rat poison and herbicides," says Ms Rasmussen. She also notes that one in three porcupines is killed on European roads each year. Ms Rasmussen is set to discuss the porcupine crisis at the EU Parliament in November.
