A report by Rune Vammen Lesner, a senior researcher at VIVE, and others, reveals that 37% of female PhD students at Danish universities have experienced at least one instance of verbal sexism. The report suggests that such experiences negatively impact the working environment and career possibilities for young researchers. Mr Lesner attributes this partly to the hierarchical structure and competitive recruitment processes at universities. Per Michael Johansen, Aalborg University rector, responds to the report, stating: "We must not only be able to react to offensive and abusive behaviour; we must also be able to prevent it... Sexism and sexually offensive or abusive behaviour have no place at Aalborg University." Anette Borchorst, emirita associate professor at Aalborg University, highlights the loss of talent due to sexist working environments.
