Vanishing Without a Trace: Why Stars Mysteriously Disappear From the Night Sky

Beskrivelse

Astrophysicists at the University of Copenhagen's Niels Bohr Institute have found evidence that very massive stars can collapse into black holes without a supernova explosion. The research was prompted by the observation of an unusual binary star system, VFTS 243, which contains a black hole but shows no signs of a past explosion. "Our analysis unequivocally points to the fact that the black hole in VFTS 243 was most likely formed immediately, with the energy mainly being lost via neutrinos," says Professor Tamborra. Researchers from many different places have contributed to the research, including Thomas Tauris from Aalborg University (Summary provided by Infomedia).
