The Electric Machines section offers research expertise in modern electrical machines, drives and other electromagnetic devices.

Comprehensive knowledge is offered in the areas of

- Modelling of Magnetic Systems
- Magnetic Material Characterisation and Modelling
- Condition Monitoring and Diagnosis
- Development of Drive Systems
- Development of CAD Software

Modelling of Magnetic Systems
Finite Element modelling and computation is an important research tool for the section. Focus is mainly on the application of FE rather than development. However, in-house code is installed in the AD programmes. Techniques for displaying movies of dynamic Finite Element results have been developed.

For rapid computations, MEC (magnetic equivalent circuits) is conveniently applied for industrial design calculations on electrical machines and magnetic devices.

Magnetic Material Characterisation and Modelling
Iron losses is an important phenomena in electrical machines and magnetic devises, especially when the flux waveforms differ from the classical sinusoidal as it does in modern converter fed machines.

Condition Monitoring and Diagnosis
In collaboration with the Electric Power Systems section and Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, PRC the section has researched methods for condition monitoring and diagnosis of faults on rotating electrical machines. This is achieved using broad bandwidth measurement of current and voltage supplied to electrical machines, followed by the extraction and analysis of suitable indicator values.

Development of Drive Systems
Together with the Power Electronics section is a variety of different drives developed. Both simple and advanced control methods in drives are also research areas in the section.

Development of CAD software
A design and simulation CAD program for Switched Reluctance Motors has been developed and maintained for more than seven years. The program, called SRDaS (Switched Reluctance Design and Simulation) offers many unique features. For example an internal FE-code, and a noise and vibration module. The noise and vibration module creates a WAV file, and the acoustic noise emitted by a given designed SRM may be heard on a PC sound system. The program has been distributed to more than 100 engineers around the world and is free. A similar program SRDaS is currently under development for the design of magnetic gearboxes. This program is called MGDaS (Magnetic Gearbox and Simulation). 

Research Mission
The section has three major goal, which is

- To maintain the leading position in electrical machine research in Denmark and to be among the worldwide leadings in Switched Reluctance machines and magnetic gears
- To be innovative in new machine topologies and to maintain the fundamental and broad machine knowledge in the section
- To promote the section R&D to commercial exploitation and applications.
