Marianne Holdgaard is a professor in family and inheritance law at the School of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Aalborg (since 2009). Holdgaard was a fellow at the Centre for Advanced Study at the Academy of Science and Letters in Oslo in 2014–15. Further, she is an elected member of International Society of Family Law, Executive Council, 2017-2020.
Marianne is the initiator and leader of the research center FamLaPP. She is heading the affiliated research group at the Institute for Law, and she is part of the consecutive group for FamLaPP.
Holdgaard's position in Aalborg is in the field of family and inheritance law. In this capacity, she has taught, supervised and published broadly, in national and international contexts. Her recent research has focused on the great variation in concepts of family that are currently applied in different aspects of family law, and how these variations impact the legal rights and protection of citizens, especially of presumably weaker groups like children and single women. She has also focused on the shifting trend towards legal protecting and recognizing of horizontal family connections on the expense of vertical family connections (biological family, especially children). Her PhD and subsequent research made extensive analysis of the application of European human rights law in Danish jurisprudence, and this remains an interest also in her research on current family law.
Marianne Holdgaard is the editor of the Danish Journal of Family and Inheritance Law and she is the head of a cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional Nordic research group: Entanglements of Nordic Family Concepts, hosted at the School of Law, Aalborg. She became member of the cross-disciplinary Nordic research group in residence at the Centre for Advanced Study at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters 2014-15, and she is still engaged in cross-disciplinary research also in this context. She is currently at the advisory board on the research project Materializing Kinship; Department of Social anthropology, Oslo University.
