The workgroup aims to optimize bioprocesses under the consideration of single-cell physiology and population aspects. Further, process coupling of mixed and mono-cultivation to achieve a broad usability of residual, recalcitrant feedstock is applied through the application of microbial hydrolysis. Bioaugmentation is used to enhance the process performance in taylor-made bioreactors with the help of suitable monitoring concepts.

Taylor-made bioreactors are also applied for filamentous fungi and other cells that are sensitive to shear forces. It is investigated whether morphology characteristics and synthesis rates are related to each other. If so, single-cell monitoring can provide valuable information about the contribution of single cells to the overall productivity. The concept of single-cell monitoring is applied in co-cultures, in which cells benefit from a complementary synthesis profile, but where species needs to be distinguished for growth control.

Life-cycle assessment of bioprocesses is conducted in order to decide for sustainable process routes and the overall potential of a bio-based economy.

The described activities cover yeast, multicellular, filamentous organisms, anaerobic and aerobic bacteria and plant cell cultures. A tight interaction between research and student education is envisaged.
