My research areas include crime and deviance, health, gender studies, and China studies. I am particularly interested in substance use (e.g., illicit drug, alcohol, and tobacco use), treatment, and drug policy studies.

My doctoral research is centered on explaining the initiation and continuation of drug use in China. Based on the quantitative analysis of 1,027 questionnaires from detained drug users, my PhD thesis outlines an integrative theoretical framework incorporating self-control, social control, social learning, and normalization theories to explain respondents’ drug use patterns. The in-depth interview analysis further revealed how drug-use networks and permissive attitudes towards drugs exerted different influences on male and female drug use behaviors. My current research is exploring the gendered mechanisms in drug treatment and rehabilitation process among users in Hong Kong, China, and Canada.

My research has been published in several international journals on criminology or substances use, including Crime & Delinquency, Drug and Alcohol Review, Substance Use & Misuse. I am an ad hoc peer reviewer for Substance Abuse, Addiction Research & Theory, Asian Journal of Criminology, and Substance Use & Misuse.
