Amin Barari currently serves as Honorary Professor in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering at RMIT University in Australia and as Associate Professor and Discipline Lead for Coastal and Offshore Geotechnics at Aalborg University (AAU) in Denmark. During the 2023–2024 academic year, he had the privilege of serving as a visiting professor at both Purdue University and Virginia Tech.
As director of a multi-institutional research center focused on coastal and offshore infrastructure resilience, his research focuses on coastal and offshore geotechnics, with a particular emphasis on the behavior and design of offshore foundations under long-term cyclic loading, including monopiles, suction caissons, and anchor foundations for deep-sea floating platforms. He also investigates a range of geohazards, such as seismic response, soil liquefaction, and landslides in both offshore and onshore environments. More recently, his work has expanded to address climate change adaptation, risk assessment, and the development of digital twins and physics-informed deep learning models to enhance the resilience of coastal and offshore infrastructure.
He received his PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from Aalborg University in 2012 and began his academic career as a postdoctoral researcher with the Offshore Foundations Research Group at AAU. He subsequently held a Visiting Research Associate position in the Section of Fluid Mechanics, Coastal and Maritime Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark, followed by a postdoctoral appointment at Virginia Tech. Prior to his current roles, he was an Associate Professor in Geotechnical/Infrastructure Engineering at both Aalborg University and RMIT University.
His publications have received more than 3,700 citations according to Google Scholar (h-index: 35).
He serves on the International Technical Committee TC209 (Offshore Geotechnics) of the ISSMGE. He has been actively involved in organizing several prestigious conferences, including Australia Wind Energy Conference & Exhibition 2024 and 2025, the as well as the 35th and 36th International Conferences on Ocean, Offshore & Arctic Engineering (OMAE 2016 & 2017), held in South Korea and Norway, respectively. Additionally, he contributed to the International Conference on Ships and Offshore Structures (ICSOS, Hamburg 2016), and the 7th International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering (Chicago, 2013).
