Forskningsprofil

Mikkel Fugl Eskjær, PhD, Associate Professor at the Department of Communication and Psychology, Aalborg University, campus Copenhagen. He holds a PhD in Film Studies from University of Copenhagen.

His research is concerned with mediated communication in relation to the environment and the more-than-human world. It touches on a broad range of topics within environmental communication including climate change journalism, media coverage of environmental conflicts, environmental justice, climate activism, resilience, sustainability, and representations of the ecological crisis in popular culture.

Working mostly from a media sociological perspective, Eskjær’s research draws on both qualitative and quantitative methodologies as well as more recent digital methods (automated content analysis, topic modelling, sentiment analysis). Additional research fields include international communication, mediatization theory, and media sociology.

Eskjær has co-authored two books and co-edited three anthologies. He is a founding member of International Environmental Communication Association (IECA) and Chair of the Science and Environment Section, ECREA (2024-26). He has been a visiting scholar at NYU (2001-03), the Danish Institute in Damascus (2007-10), Dhaka University, Bangladesh (2014-15) and University of Ottawa (2020-24).
