Forskningsprofil

I am a researcher with one foot in the clinic in the Department of Hematology at Aalborg University Hospital. My research emerges from clinical challenges, and I am engaged in several epidemiological and biochemical studies of coagulation and hematological diseases, and an innovative project investigating effects of ketones in cancer treatment. My main research area is development of new, non-invasive diagnostics and monitoring of diseases and treatments by omics-analysis of the air we exhale.

My research in exhaled breath proteomics is inspired from my clinical work, where I often deal with acute medical conditions in fragile patients.

With +10 years of experience with collection and analysis of exhaled breath samples, I have demonstrated that the air we exhale contains endogenous proteins from a broad variety of biological processes in our bodies. I think of our exhaled breath as a biological sample, just like a blood sample, but with the great benefits of non-invasive collection (as we must breathe anyway) and potential for continuous sample collection.

I lead the Exhaled Breath Diagnostics and Monitoring research group (ExBreDia) in the Department of Hematology at Aalborg University hospital. The research group was established with a Clinical Emerging Investigator grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation in 2024. As investigation of non-volatile organic compounds in the exhaled breath is still an emerging field of research, the research group focuses on method optimization and investigation of the potential for rapid diagnostics in various types of medical conditions to find the most promising paths to clinical implementation.

Throughout the years, I have been actively engaged with industrial and academic collaborators to improve exhaled breath collection and analysis, leading to advancements in equipment and methodologies opening a novel research avenue for identifying biomarkers with the potential to transform point-of-care diagnostics and monitoring. My ultimate research aim is the application of non-invasive exhaled breath precision diagnostic and monitoring methods for the benefit of both patients and society.

Undervisningsprofil

I teach medical students at master level. With PBL as take-off, I use cases from my own clinical practice in both case - and formal classes. I mainly cover lymphoproliferative diseases, anemia and acute hematological conditions.

I have been supervising several student projects, please see the up-loaded portfoli for furter information, and keep an eye on the project catalogue for projects from the ExBreDia group.
