My scientific focus area is on drug delivery to the brain and brain tumors across the blood-brain barrier (BBB)/blood-brain-tumor barrier (BBTB).

I have worked on a two-step strategy based on gene therapy which involves i) gene delivery to brain capillary endothelial cells (BCECs) and hereafter ii) BCECs will produce and secrete the encoded product into the brain parenchyma.

I have also focused on developing drug carrier types, such as magnetic nanoparticles and virus. I have developed a porcine triple co-culture BBB model based on primary cells, which is optimal for studying the integrity of the BBB and drug transport across the BBB.

Furthermore, I focus on drug delivery to brain tumors and work with primary human gliolastoma cells from patients at OUH and Kræftens Bekæmpelse. I study the interplay between the glioblastoma brain tumor and the BBB/BTB, with the goal on increasing drug delivery to the glioblastoma cells to decrease tumor growth.

Finally, I have recently started looking into the role of the immune system in the glioblastoma tumor microenvironment.
