Lotte Ansgaard Thomsen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sustainability and Planning at Aalborg University. Her research focuses on applying artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques across various domains. She works on training models for complex physical systems and adapts foundation models within agentic frameworks. She brings extensive expertise in applied AI, bridging theoretical foundations with practical implementations for sustainable solutions.
 
Her work on training models is focused on explainable AI, using satellite observations from missions such as GRACE and Swarm to forecast atmospheric quantities. She applies generative AI by adapting large language models (LLMs) within life‑cycle assessment (LCA). 

Lotte Ansgaard Thomsen's data science career using ML/AI began at CERN, where she contributed to the ATLAS experiment and the analysis leading to the discovery of the Higgs boson decaying into two taus. She completed her PhD in this field and continued her research at Yale University, where she also supervised PhD students and young postdoctoral researchers.

She broadened her academic foundation early in her career through exchange programs at the University of Florida and the University of Cambridge during her graduate studies.

Lotte Ansgaard Thomsen has industry experience as Lead Data Architect and Lead Data Scientist in the AI Solutions team at Grundfos. She was part of a confidential project and contributed by applying AI/ML to time series data for estimating metrics such as flow. The project won an internal sustainability prize.

Lotte Ansgaard Thomsen is a frequent speaker at data science events and has moderated sessions at eg Data Summit2030, the Data Innovation Summit and Big Data Minds. Her contributions to the field have led to the DAIR Awards;  Data Engineer of the Year in 2021 and Data Scientist of the Year in 2023.
