Project deals with concepts and electronic circuits to perform energy efficient sampling, quantization and processing of signals for wireless communication in a 4G communication systems. The purpose of the research project is to investigate the theoretical basis, analyze and propose solutions for how compressed sampling techniques can be implemented in communication receivers. The main issue is to propose solutions for sub-Nyquist sampling and quantization, as well as a reconstruction algorithm design – with the main objective to reduce the energy consumption in the signal processing. The concepts are to be tested in a radio frequency receiver for wireless communication purpose.



The project consists of both a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part of the project, compressed sampling algorithms are developed, which are useful for radio frequency signals. In the practical part, the developed theoretical solutions are transferred to real hardware circuitry. Before implementation of the key parts of the compressed sampling receiver, simulations and theoretical work must be done to demonstrate that the proposed concepts most likely work. The overall main objective by introducing compressed sampling is to reduce the power consumption of sampling. Also it is investigated how added signal quality may be reached without increasing the sampling rate. Wireless communication technology is chosen here for a detailed study but the concepts may equally well be used in virtually all kinds of electronic systems where analog-to-digital conversion is needed. Successful implementation of this hardware design provides a possibility to use the compressed sampling method in a wireless communication system. Since compressed sampling technology has a potential to reduce the power dissipation and increase the spectrum efficiency it is expected that this technology will significantly increase a quality of the wireless communication. The research project includes novelty as very little research so far has been done on compressed sampling applied to communication technology systems.
