Thermal discomfort is one main trigger for occupants’ interactions with the built environment such as thermostats and windows and related to the energy use in buildings. Understanding triggers for thermal (dis-)comfort is crucial for design and operation of any type of building. Concerns regarding long-existing assumptions related to the assessment of thermal perception through rating scales in e.g. post-occupancy studies exist, which demand a deeper analysis of the interpretation of the rating scales themselves.
The questionnaire applied in this study was designed in order to gain deeper knowledge on context-driven interpretation of thermal perception scales and their verbal anchors. Questionnaires were applied in 21 language versions, surveys were conducted in more than 50 cities in 30 countries resulting in a dataset with responses form over 8000 participants.

Our contribution is based on seven sub-surveys in four seasons at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany.
