Advanced Design Tools for Ocean Energy Systems Innovation, Development and Deployment

The overarching objective of the H2020 DTOceanPlus project is to develop and demonstrate an open source, integrated suite of 2nd generation design tools:
• for ocean energy technologies including sub-systems, energy capture devices and arrays,
• that support the entire technology innovation process (from concept, through to development, to deployment),
It is intended that DTOceanPlus will aid the ocean energy sector in replicating the success that other sectors (e.g. aerospace, automotive) have had in achieving commercialisation. Methods by which other sectors have reduced technical and financial risk will be assessed, adapted and imported to the ocean energy sector. In particular, methods for concept selection (Structured Innovation) and technology development (Stage-gate processes) will be developed and applied to ocean energy. These Structured Innovation and Stage-Gate design tools will be developed in conjunction with a 2nd generation of the original DTOcean suite of design tools for the Deployment and Assessment of Ocean Energy technologies. All of the DTOceanPlus design tools will be developed and demonstrated based on lessons learnt from the world’s first generation of ocean energy arrays, including those developed by DTOceanPlus project partners under the H2020 projects EnFait and CEFOW.
The following specific objectives will be achieved during the course of the DTOceanPlus project. All of the design tools mentioned below are described in detail in Section 1.3 and in the Work Package descriptions listed in Section 3.
