Wireless Networks Subgroup: Embedded Systems This project has examined the influence of memory allocation and memory mapping strategies has on the performance of a video decoder running on an embedded system. Recent research has shown that it is possible to implement low bit rate algorithms on DSP?s targeted for mobile phones. However so far there has been little focus on analysis of the impact that memory allocation as on performance. Low bit rate video decoders require large amount memory for storing previous frames and motion vectors, thus data cannot reside in the on-chip memory but part of the data must reside on external memory. External memory access has a significant impact on both execution time and on power consumption [Zucker et al.(2000)], [Budagavi et al.(2000)]. An open-source low rate MPEG algorithm (H.263 video decoder) was modified to run on a state-of-the-art DSP and substantial gain in memory access and power consumption was observed.
