Beskrivelse

Hydrogen is predicted to become a key energy carrier in the future renewable energy system, with numerous applications in transportation, grid balancing, energy transmission, and industry, as well as a feedstock to produce carbon-neutral fuels through Power-to-X (PtX) approaches. Fulfilling the great potential of hydrogen—and its implied economic opportunities—relies on the availability of reliable and efficient electrolyzersat a large scale, capable of producing green hydrogen at a lower price than fossil fossil-based alternatives.
Increasing the energy efficiency of electrolysis is a key enabler for other PtX technologies and will therefore have a significant impact in reaching the 70% CO2 reduction target in 2030.
In the BEEST2 project, a next-generation electrolyzer stack with improved efficiency will be developed and demonstrated under realistic operating conditions in a full-scale system. The project aims to improve the efficiency, price and durability of the electrodes and internal components used in alkaline water electrolyzers(AWE) by using new combinations of materials and newly discovered electrode processing techniques. As a novelty BEEST2 will use Multiphysics simulations of alkaline electrolysis stacks for a more streamlined and effective development process with reduced time-to-market and efficiency improvements.
In short, the BEEST2 project will make improvements to the key components of the alkaline electrolyzer stack in order for green hydrogen to be able to compete with hydrogen from fossil sources and thereby pave the way for a society based on 100% renewable energy.
