COBRAcable – Multi terminal HVDC-VSC link

Projektdetaljer

Beskrivelse

COBRAcable is a sub-sea power link between Denmark and The Netherlands that will enter in operation in 2019 [1]. The link intends to improve the security of supply and to integrate more renewable energy in European power network, while developing and implementing new transmission technology, as it is Multi terminal HVDC-VSC. Point-to-point connections through HVDC-VSC have been made (e.g., Skagerrak, Cross Sound Cable) and the next technological step is the development of multi terminal HVDC-VSC links. The COBRAcable is to be initially used as a two-terminal link, but later connections to offshore wind-farms and/or oil/gas platforms must be a possibility [1]. In that case the link will be operated as a multi terminal link, a scheme that has not yet been tried outside of controllable environments. This project consists in academia-industry collaboration between Aalborg University, University of Delft, Energinet.dk and TenneT with the objective of operating the COBRAcable as a fully functional multi terminal HVDC-VSC link. Several of the main technical issues hindering the implementation of the technology will be solved and solutions proposed for a more efficient operation of the COBRAcable.
