Development and performance evaluation of a novel quench detection method based on complex impedance measurements in superconducting magnets

Projektdetaljer

Beskrivelse

The research aims to show that measuring the response of an electrical excitation signal enables improved sensitivity of quench detection in superconducting magnets compared to state of the art DC measurements. To this end, an experimental platform must first be constructed to inject electrical signals into a magnet, and subsequently measure the response. Following this, work to characterize magnet's transient quenching behaviour and algorithm development to identify quenches in LTS magnets is undertaken. This work is then repeated to see if similar results can be achieved for HTS magnets. Subsequently, a real-time embedded demonstrator solution will be designed and built to prove of the viability of the developed algorithms in an operational scenario. In parallel with this work, the research will investigate the use of the system for continuous electrical integrity monitoring of a magnet.
