To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, today's power grid is evolving to include more renewable sources of electricity generation. Different from the electrical machines with high inertia in grids, these renewables are connected to the grids through solid-state power converters without inertia. This transition brings new issues to the frequency security of the renewable energy integrated low-inertia grids, which are not yet fully understood. This project aims to address these issues by controlled dynamics of power converters based on the electromagnetic dynamics of electrical networks. Next, a key performance indicator will be developed for security assessment based on nonlinear analysis theory. To enhance the frequency security of low-inertia grids, a security-constrained control problem will be solved. Finally, simulations and hardware-in-the-loop experiments will be conducted to verify the project results.
