A project on analysis and modelling of human hand movements has focused on gestures for bimodal context of communication. Of specific concern is the semantics of natural man-to-man dialog based on spoken language and accompanying hand gestures such like pointing and certain waving gestures for "come" and "go away". A system concept for the gesture component has been developed and implemented for integration with a speech component and a supervisory dialogue manager developed by CST, Center for SprogTeknologi, at Copenhagen University. The integrated system facilitates a real time dialogue between a real person (user) and a virtual, computer generated character (autonomous agent) in a virtual world. Hand gestures are registered using a 14-sensor data glove for hand configuration and a 6-degrees-of-freedom tracker for hand position and orientation in space. Subproject of STAGING. (Karin H.
