Human embryonic stem cells for the treatment of corneal stem cells deficiency

Projektdetaljer

Beskrivelse

The stem cells present in the limbus of the cornea are necessary for the renewal of corneal epithelium and thus the functional integrity of the cornea. As a result of underlying pathological process or trauma, the limbal stem cells degenerate and the blindness ensues. The objective of this project is to determine molecular characteristics of limbal stem cells and investigate procedures whereby embryonic stem cells can be directed into limbal phenotype in vitro or in vivo. The project is carried out in collaboration with Aarhus Hospital (Prof. N. Ehlers, Dr. K. Nielsen, and M. Lynge). The project is supported by Aalborg University and a private donation from John and Birthe Meyer Foundation. Persons involved: V. Zachar, S. Weli.
