Beskrivelse

It is likely that medium-duration energy storage (here defined as 4-200 hr in duration) will be the key to flexibility in energy sources and will be an important piece of the energy puzzle that will enable a future carbon-free energy system. This project will support a Danish consortium's participation in the International Energy Agency Task on medium-duration energy storage (MDES, Task 42) that will start in the spring of 2023. Five Danish academic and industrial partners, including DTU Energy, Hyme, PlanEnergi, AAU, and Energinet, will participate in the project. The Danish consortium's efforts will be focused on Subtask 2 and Subtask 4 within the IEA Task 42, namely Technologies within the MDES Space and Policy structures & market mechanisms for MDES. The project will analyse at least three scenarios for implemented malten salt storage as an MDES: replacing natura! gas as a heat source for medium temperature industrial processes, implementation with wind power and power-to-X on energy islands, and retrofit of coal-fired combined heat and power plants. These tasks will be distributed in the four work packages led by the different partners in the consortium.
