In recent years, we have witnessed several crises (financial crisis, refugee crisis, health crisis) which have questioned the capabilities of governments to respond satisfactorily to people’s claims and interests. This questioning has led social movements to focus on the need of deepening the meaning of democracy to improve economic, political and social conditions. Mobilizing for democracy implies that: 1) any social transformation should start by expanding the limits of what democracy is; 2) social movements contribute to transform democracy through their demands and ways of organizing; and 3) although manifested in local and national spaces, mobilizations also contribute to forge transnational alliances and imaginaries.
