Beskrivelse

The power system is in a period with great change. The power system is transitioning from centralized generator based power generation to distributed power electronics based generation. Additionally the integration of renewables bring with it new opportunities and challenges for the users and operators of the power system.

Almost paradoxically the wear-out failures of power electronics based power systems originate and propagate in very small physical regions of single components, while the loading conditions which drive the wear-out mechanisms in those small regions are affected and caused by the dynamics and operation of the entire connected grid. Additionally, while the life time of one such component may be years or even decades the loading occurs with dynamics in the millisecond or even microsecond timescale.

The objective of this project is to develop a holistic modelling approach to the component and system reliability. A modelling approach taking all of the previously mentioned issues into account has a natural tendency to become both complex and impractical, therefore it is paramount to develop new methods to decrease the computational burden of such a model.
