The project tasks are connected with NOV plan of injecting current in the inside metal surface of a pipe, returning the current in the outer metal layer of the same pipe, with the end goal of heating up the fluid flowing inside. The current can be injected with either fluid moving or still in the pipe.
The project’s main objective is:
To access the presence of currents outside of the pipe (“current leakage”), respective magnitudes and their distribution, together with the estimation of the voltage difference between grounding points;
Different operational scenarios are to be analyzed in connection with the main objective. More specifically:
• Different grounding configurations at the ship and their respective influence in the current loops;
• Damage in the pipe outer layer, resulting in a short-circuit of the sea water with the pipe outer metal layer. “Faults” will be considered at different points of the pipe;
• The presence of other pipes in the vicinity will affect the return current flow, as the metal layers of these pipes provide a low impedance path for the return current.
