Beskrivelse

Abstract:
To address the rapid depletion of fossil fuels and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, it is critical to develop low-emission hydrogen production from renewable sources. Water electrolysis is one of the most mature technologies for pure hydrogen production. However, the requirement for ultra-pure water puts a heavy burden on water resources, especially when thinking of scaling up the technology globally. In this project, alternative water sources are introduced into the field of electrolysis to cutdown the cost and then to promote the development of water electrolysis. The degradation mechanism of PEM electrolyzer raised by tracing impurities in the reclaimed water will be investigated. The project addresses both current and future issues of commercial electrolysis technologies and therefore facilitates the development of PtX technologies in a sustainable way, especially the effect of impurities in the feedstock on the performance of commercially available electrolyzers. This project is expected to scout water cleaning techniques suitable for electrolysis purposes, by mapping the achievable purity levels using different techniques and different water sources and by investigating their effect on electrolyzer performance.
