The SCRL was founded in September 2001 as a result of the joint Siemens-CTIF cooperation with the goal to investigate future high-dependability solutions in IP-based wireless networks. The SCRL laboratory includes a testbed installation used within previous and current projects, where protocols and architectures such as SIP, IMS, RSerPool and SCTP were implemented and tested. The SCRL has also been used as an educational environment, where a number of Master study programs and projects have been carried out in the area of distributed and cluster redundancy platforms in 3GPP IMS, failure-detection mechanisms, and dynamic grouping of redundancy in large pools. Since February 2004, researchers working at SCRL have also focused on macro-mobility management in IMS-based environments, especially designing concepts for context-based fast handovers, and interactions between MIPv6 mobility support and SIP session and access control.
