The production of electricity from wind in European countries constitutes is as much as 65 % of the global production. The main reason for the increase is due to a global requirement on reducing the amount of CO2 emitted. Based on a newly published energy plan in 2030 by the Danish Society of Engineers, 50 % of wind turbines should be offshore.

Different foundation concepts have been presented and applied to offshore wind turbines designed and constructed all over the world. The choice of the foundation concept for an offshore windmill turbine is governed by several factors, which include soil conditions, the water depth at the location, the scour and erosion, the capacity of the turbines, the foundation cost, etc.

Recent research and development projects have shown that suction caissons may be used as offshore wind turbine foundations in suitable soil conditions. Suction caissons (bucket foundations or skirted foundations) have previously been used as anchors and foundations for several offshore platforms. When suction caissons are applied as monopod foundations for wind turbines, they must be able to sustain a significant overturning moment. The suction caisson is installed by using suction as the driving force and does not require heavy installation equipment.

In this research, the soil structure interaction under dynamic loading generated by wind turbine is investigated by numerical method.
