    Beskrivelse

The demands for efficient communication tools in collaborative design are essential to modern designers. New technologies evolve fast in the area of supporting the product design process. Especially Virtual Reality technologies are evolving rapidly in these years. Many commercially available systems lack generality and easyness in collaborating across different CAD and display platforms in that they mostly are concerned about promoting the vendors own CAD systems. As an alternative to these CAD based PDM systems, the XML and VRML formats are fast evolving standards for sharing data across the Internet. These standards should be seen as alternatives to the STEP standard. At the VR-medialab, Aalborg University, a system is being built for communicating designs in collaborative designwork so that it is possible with small effort to work simultaniously on designs at different platforms (Ranging from Virtual Reality Caves, Immersive displays, Workstations PC with 3D interfaces and normal PC's). The implementation is expected to be finished late spring 2002. This tool enables designers and engineers to work together from different locations around the world and with different technologies and they will still be able to seamslessly communicate with each other through this design collaboration tool. The main purpose is to support designers with tools for managing Geometric product representation, Product Structure and other related design documentation. Duration: September 1 2001 till January 31 2003. (Jørgen Schiønning Larsen)
