Abstract

This paper presents a physical model test study to improve description of run-up events on dikes in oblique long and short-crested waves in terms of flow depth, flow velocities and overtopping. The paper focus on the flow velocities and a new method is proposed for determining flow velocities and flow directions on a dike. A validation of the proposed method is made against existing semiempirical formulae and measurements from a micro-propeller in case of perpendicular long-crested waves. Moreover, the method is applied for long- and short-crested oblique waves where results show that the method provide mean flow directions which approximately correspond to the incident wave directions.
