Abstract

It is crucial managing labor pain considering the well-being of the parturient, fetus, and the labor progress. Alternative approaches are needed for labor pain management. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has been used for labor pain control for several decades, though it is not routinely used in intrapartum care.
The present thesis aimed to investigate TENS for labor pain control through three studies. First, a systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of TENS for labor pain control (Study I). Next, a pilot study investigated the optimal varying frequencies for labor pain control (Study II). Finally, a feasibility study aimed to develop a novel technique of combining TENS with tocodynamometer (TOCO) for automated stimulation during uterine contractions (Study III).
