Abstract

During the construction stages of large engineering facilities, the management of the associated risks is often a prerequisite of the involved project stakeholders. In general, risks are identified, at best quantified and their acceptance or mitigation is based on the fulfillment of a number of criteria set by the project stakeholders. The present paper presents a probabilistic approach for the formulation of quality control acceptance criteria for newly built concrete structures focusing on the spatial variability of the most decisive structural performance parameters. The aim is to provide the owners of structures a consistent basis for specifying and assessing the acceptability of the spatial variability of concrete material properties. An example for a Swiss road tunnel is provided for the formulation of acceptance criteria for the spatial variability of the concrete cover depth for a tunnel segment, at which the decisive deterioration mechanism is carbonation.
