Abstract

In this chapter I will describe how music is used in a wide range of initiatives with persons suffering from dementia. There are various ways of implementing music: in groups or individually, by singing songs, listening to music, dancing, or improvising on instruments. I hope to give an introduction to these initiatives and the general idea behind them, based on a systematic qualitative literature review. The first section of the chapter starts with some information about dementia as a dialogic-degenerative disease and sums up the various treatment initiatives. The overall results from a large number of research studies are then considered.
