    Abstract

    Monstertypologier.

    IN ENGLISH:
The starting point of the research project is the iconography of the monster primarily within TV and film, but also within classical literature from the 1760s and onward. The next step is registration and analysis of the precise iconology of monster types. The aim of the investigation is to establish how the historical manifestation forms can establish movements in its society and the ontology that the monster represents. The result of the investigation aims at being part of the cultural history of fear focusing on fiction.
There is an interpretative imperative in the concept of the monster based on the fact that monsters do not exist, and they therefore are signs of something other than themselves. They are symbols that demand explanation.
The designation “monstrology” must be understood etymologically. The word comes from Latin moneo, to show, to point at, to warn, and the suffix –ology from the Greek to speak. In this sense the research project is a demonstration of what monsters have meant through the times with special focus on the present.
