Abstract

Zygmunt Bauman is one of the leading sociologists and social thinkers in the world today. His work has deservedly received widespread international recognition and acclaim. This book seeks to explore some of the more critical dimensions detectable in Bauman’s work in order to think ‘beyond Bauman’. The book consists of chapters dealing with some proposed omissions and absences in Bauman’s sociology, chapters comparing Bauman’s ideas to those of other prominent social thinkers as well as chapters devoted to teasing out some problems and pitfalls in his work. All in all, the book aspires to show that despite Bauman’s status as a key sociological thinker, there are also certain deficiencies demanding critical discussion.

The book is edited by Michael Hviid Jacobsen, Professor of Sociology at Aalborg University, Denmark, who has published extensively on the sociology of Zygmunt Bauman.
