Utilising digital technology for dialogue and evaluation: a quasi-scholastic method in action

Abstrakt

This article presents a series of studies that investigate how digital technology can enhance evaluation through dialogue in the context of university college teaching. The studies vary from synchronous classroom evaluation on smartphones, to online discussion fora as dialogue facilitators. It is the premise of the studies that the general organisation of teaching remains as we know it but the mechanisms that catalyse and facilitate evaluation and dialogue change. One of the founding principles of the pedagogic design is that every student should be at the centre of his or her own learning process that means that peripheral participation is only legitimate if the student is in the process of centring him/herself in the learning process. The process of centring the student in the learning process seems to require a rhetorical and practical change in the way we plan the students’ preparation for lessons, in the way the students engage in the lessons and in the way we evaluate and assess the students’ achievements in the course. The studies presented in this article show practical cases ‘quasi-scholastic’ methods of centring in on the students’ learning through evaluating dialogue facilitated by digital technology. The article is critical towards the current state of the classroom dialogue in university college teaching and suggests other ways of qualifying dialogue through digital technology.
