Buffer Sizing and Route Scheduling for Reliable Autonomous Vehicle Operations in a Dynamic Environment

Abstract

Due to various internal and external factors, the travel time of autonomous vehicles is uncertain. This uncertainty poses a significant challenge in addressing the routing problem of an autonomous vehicle-based system, which requires reliable and efficient routing schedules. To overcome this challenge and ensure safe and reliable autonomous vehicle operations, we propose inserting safety time buffers to the routing schedules of autonomous vehicles. These buffers help separate vehicles in time and position, thus ensuring safe and efficient operations. To determine the size of the buffers, we take into account the crossing patterns of the vehicles’ routes. Once the buffer sizes are determined, a linear program is used to calculate the departure time of vehicles from each node of their routes. We evaluate the feasibility and performance of the proposed model by comparing it to a reference solution that does not incorporate the uncertainty into the vehicle routing schedule.
