Abstract

This literature review aims to establish an overview of tools and techniques used by researchers to engage with people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We searched through papers from major HCI conferences, and filtered those to arrive at a corpus of 8 key papers. Our analysis resulted in six categories of applied tools and techniques: observations, interview, make tools, design workshop, prototyping and surveys that have been used to involve people with ASD in various domains such as social skills, practical challenges, assistive technologies and personal well-being. The paper’s main contribution is meant as an overview and starting point for further research into co-designing with adults with ASD.
