Abstract

Subcooled compressed air energy storage (SCAES) technology has newly been introduced. This system stores electricity as compressed air and co-generates heat, cold and electricity as discharging. In this work, it is proposed to use the heat generation potential of the system to drive an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) to increase the electrical efficiency of the SCAES. This proposal is modeled, simulated and analyzed. It is well-proved that the combined SCAES-ORC has better electricity and cold production performances about 20% compared to the SCAES system. In addition, due to the heat production of the ORC unit, the heat output of the system is not affected significantly.
