Abstract

Despite big advances in the availability and ease of use of digital technologies and autonomous systems, we have failed to see a complete paradigm shift, which unlocks the interconnected vision of Industry 4.0 - this is especially apparent within smaller and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This chapter offers a discussion on competence considerations for Industry 4.0 in light of changing work environments, and advocates for a human-centric approach to digitalization. Based on current literature on competence requirements, a brief overview of some key competences is presented and divided into management, backend, and frontend. The chapter highlights some research initiatives, which focus on human factors, and will end with an outlook on future directions within manufacturing, which seems much more inclusive and human-centric than is currently happening today within manufacturing.
