Abstract
Background: Measuring quality of care is an important and attractive topic for different end-users. Indicators are used in order to quantify the quality of health care and there is an increasing interest on combining these indicators to get an overall picture of quality.

We investigated different approaches that has been used to create composite measures to assess process quality of health care and the methodological considerations and justifications behind them.
Methods: We conducted a literature search on PubMed and EMBASE databases (latest update 2 May 2019).
