Constructed wetland to treat wastewater and produce water for irrigation

Abstract

A constructed wetland is an appealing solution for wastewater treatment in areas with low
wastewater production (below 500 units). Operating a constructed wetland is relatively
straightforward, although the phosphorus concentration in the effluent may be higher when compared
to conventional biological wastewater treatment methods. In tourist areas, especially those with
fluctuating seasonal loads and high summer demand, using treated wastewater for irrigation can be
an attractive option, utilizing phosphorus and nitrogen present in the treated wastewater as a valuable
resource. In such cases, achieving high removal rates for phosphorus and nitrogen may not be critical.
However, for plants where irrigation is not a possibility, alternative strategies for phosphorus
removal are essential.
