Design of Knowledge-Based Collaborative Decision-Making in Networks of Organizations

Fact-based decisions are often driving forces for digital transformation. Is there an unconditionally positive connection between access to real-time information from digital solutions and good decisions? This research project reveals several factors other than IT solutions that lead to good decision making in networks of companies operating in turbulent environments.
The starting point for the project is related to the claim that integrated operations provide better decisions. Collaboration practices in and between companies from the Norwegian offshore oil and gas industry has been studied to clarify how integrated operations provide better decisions. What are the critical elements involved in this interaction?
The practical value of the project is linked to a combination of frameworks and recommendations for the design of knowledge-based collaborative decision-making. A nine-step design process consisting of three groups of systematic principles is proposed:
• Human dimension with knowledge integration.
• Structural dimension with dynamic structuring.
• Technological dimension with enabling information flow.
