Abstract
In this chapter, unique characteristics, challenges and needs of Chinese basic educational needs are reflected based on a dialogue and comparison with the international background. Problems concerning basic abilities in children’s daily life practice are outlined to understand the complex re-constructing process of value systems and educational practices in modern China. In this chapter, we propose that “consciousness” should be restored as the key issue in deep psychological researches in developmental and educational psychology. A look on education as institutionalized dramaturgy—“The pupil as actor and author,” “The class as theater company” and “The teacher as a director”—can function as an innovative interpretational framework to understand the school context and its societal functions.
