    Abstrakt

“Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans,” a song made iconic by Louis Armstrong in the 1947 movie New Orleans, articulates the idea of New Orleans as an object of romantic nostalgia. The lyrics exemplify the broad narrative that paints New Orleans as both a place and an exotic fantasy that was the deliberate creation of businessmen, architectural preservationists (Stanonis 2006; Souther 2006), and writers and artists, particularly George Washington Cable, Lafcadio Hearn, Lyle Saxon, and Alice Dunbar Nelson (Woodland 1987; Stanonis 2001; Hearn 2001; Burnett 2009; Picone 2014).
